Paul Beardsley Thanks for answering. I know there are health problems associated with cannibalism but I don’t think eating human flesh suddenly makes you mad. But honestly, if our meat source disappeared, I don’t think many people would even think of eating people, and if it were suggested almost everyone would reject the idea. It’s not a tendency bubbling under the surface, but I suspect the book requires you to think it is.

Trinity Human meat doesn't drive people insane. The brains do. That's because of things called prions. Nasty things. but also why in the novel, they have a moment mentioning how there was conflicting science about it (because the government doesn't care if the meat is no good, they care about the profit from more meat (re: brains)).

Shelley Ah okay, thanks for that Trinity.

Marzena Maybe not mad in a medical sense but they were all kind of 'different'. Less 'human' I guess. When you think about the game the children played 'what do you taste like'. Even the acceptance level indicates ... well, 'bonkers' on today's standards.

Gayle Gordon I think they are. Marcos's niece and nephew are psychos and Marcos himself goes mad in the end. I'm convinced that's why he did what he did to Jasmine. Seeing the scavengers devouring a truckload of people they knocked over finally drove him over the edge. That's my theory,=.
