In my opinion, you kind of have to pretend like they're entirely separate things if you're going to enjoy the film. So many of the wonderful things about the book are COMPLETELY different in the film. If you don't expect the film to be like the book, it's fun to watch, but it's still not anywhere near as good (again, this is all just my opinion).
