Agree! I didn't put this together but I think you may have nailed it.
Jasmine, that is how I interpreted them taking off their clothes and swimming off into the sunlight, represented their feelings of freedom.
Yes, thanks for the insight. They are at once being cleansed and baptised. At the beginning it was difficult to be in Reese's skin as he continually hid his chest and couldn't express his sexuality. The operation he had liberated him from the body of a woman that he did not feel comfortable in. At last, he could be himself, exposed to the light. And she could take part in his joy and liberation, as well as her own.
I'm so glad for all of these explanations because it turned my opinion of a lackluster ending into a VERY POWERFUL ending!
