I found this book very disturbing and wanted to understand why Vanessa was so vulnerable to abuse of any sort. Or, could this happen to anyone her age?
This can, does, and will happen to not just girls of all walks of life, but boys too. There's nothing about the child that's wrong, missing, or broken: Predators simply see what they want and can say/do anything to get it.
What an unhelpful comment. The person is trying to understand the dynamics of the relationship. She never said that only traumatic childhoods lead to abuse.
