It matters because I can't connect with gay characters; thus, I would not be able to enjoy the story.
I'm going to ignore how homophobic this comment sounds and say that you don't have to connect or relate to a character to enjoy a story. Instead, you could try empathising with people who are different from you.
Reading about and emphasising with gay characters might help you to realise how ridiculous your homophobic views are
Stephanie, would you expect homosexual readers to relate with heterosexual romance novel characters? I wouldn't. They certainly may relate to them and that's great if they do, but to consider it hateful to not be able to relate to something one will likely never themselves experience or fully understand seems absurd to me. If they don't relate to the characters and dislike the novel, would they be a "heterophobe?" Surely you'd not think such a thing. Perhaps there's a significant shred of ignorance in refusing to interact with and explore topics you don't necessarily relate to, and I would I agree that's regrettable. Not sure what you're attempting to accomplish here by making sweeping, spiteful accusations of people.
As it is on a list of gay literary fiction I don't think it a silly or inappropriate question, those lists are of variable accuracy - though I think your answer and others like are insufferably sanctimonious.
