Agreed. Not to mention the mental effect it may have on the children? I would have moved. No question.
Agree! The rats & the elderly neighbor trying to eat Patricia? These things were not given much weight at all
Lord, no--we do not suffer from rat gang attacks.
I'm listening to the audio version and I was driving and clutching my necklace yelling "Holy s**t, holy s**t, let it be a dream.. OMG, make it stop!" I had nightmares when I saw Ratatouille, I thought for sure I'd have a nightmare that night!!
The whole beginning of the book with these 2 attacks gave me campy horror movie vibes, which I assumed was intentional. Where really horrible things happen but then you move on pretty quickly.
I agree! Between the rats and the neighbor trying to eat Patricia... Honestly, I thought it would be dark humor by the way everyone accepted these. But then it just kept getting worse and I knew it wasn't really going to be funny/campy at all.
I’m pretty sure that was supposed to illustrate how desperate the people of The Old Village were to stick their heads in the sand and ignore anything that tarnished their unrealistic white washed southern living. Acknowledging that things aren’t perfect and there are uncomfortable truths would make it difficult for them the maintain the carefully cultivated facade in which they relied on for a Seanad of order and meaning.
The rat scene being so dismissed drove me insane as well as they stated Mrs Savage was very malnurished and had sores and dehyrdated... an I want to know why James wasn't hardcore investigated for that if he was the caretaker!
I agree! I wouldn't have been able to sleep in my house if this had happened to me. I was frustrated at the oblivion the characters around Patricia acted with. Some very abnormal things happen and they just find excuses...
It was bizarre how easily this was passed over. This might have been the freakiest part in the whole book
