The ending was awful because of all the loose threads left untidy. Where did Mary really come from? Why ever did Mrs. Richardson allow Mary back into her life?
You may feel that the ending was “awful”, but honestly, for anyone who’s actually dealt with a psychopath, the fact that Mrs. Richardson let Mary back into her life would be understandable.
The most dangerous thing about psychopaths is that they don’t act like psychopaths. They know how to hide who they really are. They know how to make people feel sympathy for them. They’re such good performers that it would be easy for Mary to work her way into Mrs. Richardson’s life again.
Take it from me; I have dealt with a psychopath/sociopath before, and they are so terrifyingly good at hiding who they really are.
Okay, I'll buy that the reader had actually to deal with a psychopath in order to think that the ending was satisfactory. But, there still were too many unexplained issues that were alluded to in the story.
Oh! This is such a good point! I was a bit hurt by the ending because we are lead to a point where we sympathize with Mary and *want* her to have that perfect, happy ending. But the more I think about that kind of ending, the more unreal it feels. I really appreciate your well-thought-out response; had me thinking a different way.
Is she really a psychopath though? Shoe claimed that she gave baby Alyssa the pills to quiet her just like they are given to her (Mary) to calm her? At age nine would she have known that it wouldn’t work the same for an infant? I also don’t recall anyone admitting how the brother was killed, unless I missed that part.
