Marianne snow was incapable of love. he only cared for himself from the very beginning... and that was the point. he didnt love Lucy, he loved himself with Lucy. so when he realized he hated his possible new life and that she might have figured out which he was and that she might not look at home the same, he "turned" on her. no different than how he did with sejanus, clemensia, or anyone else in his life.

Kay Dee (what is your storygraph name? mine is in my bio. join me!) Meadows totally agree with you marianne. snow did not change at the end of the book. he was always selfish. snow's idea of love was very self centered and conditional on what others did for him or how they made him feel.

Jamie Gregory I see why you think his change at the end was abrupt, but it really wasn't. I think you can see throughout the book that he ultimately would never choose a life out in the wild after everything he ultimately does to preserve himself and his family's name.
