I don't know why they wouldn't by the bike in Greenville. It is likely the closest large town and it is already part of the story. :-)
I missed the reference in the book to “8 or 10 story” buildings. There are only two now, I think, and maybe just the Battery Park building in the 60’s.

It's 5.5 hours by car on I-40 from Wilmington, NC to Asheville, NC. Anywhere else would be further.
