That's because the Jake successful academic never existed, it was one of (imaginary) personalities of jake the janitor, that he lived through.
I think he actually *was* a super smart guy with a lot of potential. I do agree that he never gained professional success, but the story implies that he did have academic success. He was simply inhibited by his reclusive nature.
But the story mentioned he's lived 30 (!) years as a janitor, in this one school. Even though he was an extremely intelligent and promissing student, his illness took the best of him and he couldn't cope. Had to retreat. And that's when he started imagining what would have happened IF he'd chatted to the pretty girl. So obsessively, that eventually he's started living through them. But here's where it crashes for me, because if he's lived through his fantasies, the woman would not have been unaware of being one of his personas, and if she indeed was one of his personas - he would have impossibly remembered the moment when he's created them, as described in the book he put in his memoir / goodbye letter....
