I would disagree that she's attracted to Christ. She's attracted to Jesus, a man and he is nowhere near the main focus of the book. I'd say that the main focus is her desire to discover her voice in an extraordinarily patriarchal culture. He's her partner who encourages her to find her voice even as he is absent much of the time.
