Keegan’s book came out while I was at Clemson. Reading it is what got me back into the Civil War. Need to reread it.
I really appreciated his European perspective on the war. I was also struck by the many tangential observations Keegan inserts without losing his narrative flow; several of them were new to me and could have easily formed their own book (e..g., why there was no great Civil War literary tradition similar to that of Europe after World War I).
