Cecily A book I've long known of, but not really been tempted by. Your penultimate paragraph makes it sound worth reading.
(I wonder how it compares with Orwell's Down and Out in Paris and London - which I've also not read?)

Thanks for stopping by, Cecily. This book is very well reviewed by GR friends, which is the reason I was drawn to it. It is not easy to read, however, as the unknown writer is not too likeable a person. Yet, his suffering was palpable and I could not help feeling sorry for his plight and hoping that he will find food to relieve his hunger and have a better life.

Pedro I read this one so long ago that it feels like another lifetime now. I think I also gave it four stars when I joined this site, but like you, I was moved by it. Excellent review!

Thank you, Pedro. Good to know you were moved by this book too.

Ken This may have been my first Hamsun. If you liked it, move on to Mysteries and Pan!

Ken, thanks for putting these titles on my radar. I will check them out some day soon.
