Emily Crowe Your review made me chuckle. There wasn't much that I appreciate about this book (hence my "it was okay" rating) but i certainly appreciate your review.

Ken EH's writing is... "polarizing," shall we say.

Edita I've reread "The Sun Also Rises" so many times myself... I miss this book again. I always come back to Hemingway when I get tired of everything.

Ken Me too, Edita. I see it'll be seven years this July. It may be time to wade in anew come summer! The seven-year itch, call it.

Diane Barnes I love your review, although I'm not a Hemingway fan. Your last two paragraphs beat anything he ever wrote.

I get it and completely understand EH's detractors. My admiration for *some* of his stuff is one of my literary weaknesses, but I wear it on my sleeve.

Lorna Beautiful review, Ken. I have not read this book yet but it is waiting for me in my library, “yellow pages and signature smell of old paper and ink.” Great stuff, Ken!

Thank goodness library books are so patient. I hope you enjoy this, Lorna!

snorwick When I go to my sister’s farmhouse I inevitably get drawn to my brother-in-law’s library. Family noises in rooms nearby but it’s a sort of alcove on the far end of the house. He’s got everything I like. Each time I visit, I return a stack of books I borrowed last time and he sends me with another. Sun Also Rises made it into this stack with me.

Sounds like an excellent set-up. And. you're to be commended. As we have all found out the hard way, not everyone who borrows a book returns it.

Flo The change of scenery didn't work for me. I prefer Cohn to Jake and Paris to Spain. :))

True, people's behavior changed with the scenery. Still, the post-Pamplona scenes on Spain's northern beaches were lovely.

Ulysse Lovely Ken! Old paper and ink, best smell in the world.

Yeah, somehow I can't picture people saying in 100 years: oh I love the smell of old AI.

message 16: by Ken (new)

Ken If we're here in 100 years (which takes us back to AI).

message 17: by Ulysse (new)

Ulysse Haha right. I should reword my comment. Somehow I can picture some bot saying in 100 years: I love the smell of old AI.

message 18: by Nick (new)

Nick I’m about to embark on Sun also rises, Ken. Will this be a seven year tradition for me?

message 19: by Ken (new)

Ken God only knows, Nick. It's not July, for one, so all bets are off! Still, I think you're heading into summer in Oz, so maybe just as good. Just remember to expect all the nastiness of the party crowd and to wash it all off in the briny when Jake escapes to the ocean.
