Carol I enjoyed his humor , and the book I thought was well done. It certainly struck a cord with me.

Ken Yeah, I found my views sympatico with his, too. Seemed the type of guy I would enjoy meeting. And so I did, in a way. And you, too!

message 3: by Carol (new)

Carol Yes, he felt like an old friend.

message 4: by Ken (new)

Ken Well, there are still other books of his I haven't read. He's on my longterm plan, in that respect.

message 5: by Candi (new)

Candi I'm looking forward to this after becoming an instant fan of Doyle's following my recent reading of Mink River. Terrific review, Ken!

message 6: by Diane (new)

Diane Barnes I can't wait to read this. I read one of his novels (The Plover), became an instant fan, then read his essays about books (Reading in Bed). I love his sense of humor and his imagination. This one and Mink River are next.

Ken Candi, check out The Plover this year, too.

Diane, interesting how he makes his fans instantly. A secret every writer would like to procure! ;-)

message 8: by Carol (new)

Carol He does, because he could speak about every day occurrences, getting to the realness of life.

I hope to do that, Ken :)

Sue Ken, I’m reading this so slowly because I don’t want that voice to end. It’s silly because I have more of his writing actually on hand and haven’t read Mink River yet. I plan this to be my last book of the year. My first of his was The Plover which swept me away. And his short works and essays, well I find them very relatable. I gave this book to a close friend for Christmas too.

Ken Great choice for a Christmas gift, Sue! Good, approachable, and thought-provoking. Plus I grow more kindly to "spiritual" as time goes by. I see it as a "big tent" word, one no religion or culture can rightly hog. As it should be!

message 12: by Carol (new)

Carol Those are my thoughts too, Ken. If you are kind, thoughtful and peace loving with justice for our fellow humans, who cares where our knees or hearts are directed. I know I don’t.

message 13: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Ken, I'm also a fan of Doyle's and have read 3 books, at least. I loved Chicago, too. I don't know what I expected, but as always, his writing is fresh somehow. Honest and yet beautiful. I'll look for some of the other books and essays. Thanks for posting them.

Ray Nessly Wait ... what? I never liked/voted/thumbs upped this review?! I was 100% sure I had. (well okay, 99.31459265...) Sorry, man. Fixed. Oh and I never commented either? Sheesh .... Fine review, several subtleties I'd noticed but didnt touch on in my own review. You reviewed this during the Christmas season. In the spirit of the current season: Thank you, again, for introducing me to this beautiful writer, via your review of Mink River. Have a great T day. gobble-gobble

Wow. You've got those percentages down. Math was always my Achilles-is-a-heel. In the school play my role was least common denominator.

In any event, if I'm the one who led you here, I'm glad to have helped. I'm sure you'll lead me and others to some great places, too, given the thoroughness of your reviews (rhymin' Simon today).

Happy Turkey Day back at ya. My wife and I are doing take-out, so it's a rare one. Maybe we'll actually like it.

Barbara Ken, I somehow missed this review before and have never read Brian Doyle. Thank you for the essay on your website. It is lovely and sends me off to read more of him. I have two grown sons of my own to lean on though they are more than a decade older than his were then.

Probably you will enjoy his work all the more! When and if you get to it, I'll look forward to your thoughts!

This is where I say "Great minds" (even though mine doesn't always live up to the adjective, ha-ha).
