This main character sounds like the epitome of TSTL, ugh.

Exactly!!! The kind of person who featured as a heroine in a 1970s Hammer Horror. But with a child!!!!

It's got to the point with me where I actually decide not to read a lot of them because I'm so often disappointed. I don't just mean the on-line popular reads, but I've found a few on the tables in Waterstones that are mega sellers and have the recommended by staff labels that I've never finished.

I have MAJOR hype aversion myself - the harder someone tries to sell something and/or the more people rave about something, the less inclined I am to read it, even if its something that I think I'd enjoy. I've just decided that my tastes are not popular modern tastes, and to go with my gut, so to speak. Plus, the library can save a lot of wallet regret on potentially "iffy" titles, LOL!!
I'm the same with the mega sellers tables.
I've even got a pop up bookshop in my village now and she is great at explaining the 'good stuff' but I mostly just hate it!

I so agree, go with your gut - it's a lesson I'm finally learning myself. And I must say, my other instinct is that if one of my sisters in particular recommends something as feel good, that means give it a big swerve.

I do love a local bookshop. I'm the same with mine, I find that one of the assistants in particular is usually spot on. My downfall is usually the tables in Waterstones these days - I think I just need to avoid anything with the epithet 'popular' or 'best seller'
