Christine Shapiro I actually did agree with several of the passages in this book in which Vance yearns for a society less structured on and less directed towards accumulating wealth, and more on care for each other and enhancing family life. Bravo! But where has that voice been in this administration, as healthcare to the poor and middle class has been cut, both domestically and internationally? When non-criminal immigrants have been treated like human trash, with no compassion or dignity—being housed worse than animals and deported to foreign countries where their fate may likely be death? Where our defense department has been traded for a culture of “warriors,” more offense than simply protection?
And Vance is so well-versed in Augustinian thought?! For how long, proportionately, versus a true Augustinian, Pope Leo XIV?! He’s somehow such a theological expert that he feels comfortable correcting the Pope on multiple occasions?! That’s really rich.
I’m all for someone being both spiritually and intellectually curious about the faith, but please, LIVE IT! As the teachers in my Catholic and lay schools said, “Show your work!

Carmen Hartono Agreed, Christine.
Faith without works is dead. James 2:14-26

Jennifer Lane What a thoughtful review. I liked his questions about the meaning of life and how those questions propelled him to return to his faith.
