Hi Yun. Your review is spot on. Although it was an engrossing read, as you said, it was also frustrating at times. Some of the early clues were way off by the end and they were all over the place. Maybe that's why we were sometimes engrossed because it was such a puzzle of random clues. Like this one: "He had a wolfish look about him, a leanness that signified hunger." Great review.
Fantastic review, Yun! I like outliner reviews. :D
You make great points about fluffing up novels and dumb FMCs. I should be prepared for it if/ when I get to this one (at least it is not an ARC).
I agree, she can be long winded, which generally I detest. I understand your frustration. Hope your next read is stellar!

Thanks, Kimberly! Glad I wasn't the only one who felt the frustrations. Yes, the clues were so random and so were the endings for both mysteries! Like they kept mentioning how (view spoiler) and then nothing came of it.

Thanks, Srivalli! I hope you enjoy more than I did. Will be curious to see your thoughts. :)

Thanks, Barbara! Glad you enjoyed this one a lot more! :)
Yes! I went in expecting to be moved and amazed because there is so much buzz around this book. Ultimately, I found it didn’t resonate emotionally in the way I had hoped. It held my interest, but the payoff was lackluster.
I understand the three stars. You did a wonderful job explaining your rating. I think your review will speak to a lot of readers. I liked it more than you but felt the same in some instances. 500 pages was a bit much and it felt like work at times. Hope your next one hits the mark.
Thanks for confirming my suspicions that this book will not work for me. I didn’t love Long Bright River for the same reasons you mention here. Will be skipping! Terrific review!
Sorry ya had such a so-so read 😕. I was hoping a good one for ya on my Birthday. I guess I missed a candle🙂
I did enjoy it more but I don't read that many mysteries so maybe my expectations aren't so high? I do expect more from other genres. Hope your next one hits the bar, Yun. A fair assessment.
Interesting review Yun..mixed bag is how I'd characterize it. That said, having enjoyed Bright River others she's written were much too dark and as you said, tend to meander..And I agree about book length having recently suffered through Greg Ile's "Southern Man" which was at least 600 pages TOO long, LOL
Oh! Finally a mixed review for this one! It had been getting so many 5 stars that I knew it wasn't for me. :D I'm in the same boat as you, Yun. Literary flourishes are one thing, but to have a book with only literary flourishes and no plot never works for me. I'll reduce my expectations from this one. Thanks so much for your detailed, honest feedback! :)

Thanks, R.J.! Glad it's not just me. It really was a lackluster payoff after so many pages. Still, glad you enjoyed it a bit more than me. :)

Eloquent review, Yun! 💖 I was one of the many to 5 star this book but you do make some really excellent points that I hadn't considered while I was reading this. I hope that you have an immensely satisfying book lined up next in the queue!
I’ve got this on hold so I’m curious how I will feel about it. An honest and forthright review Yun 😍
Great review Yun. I’m so glad I’m not the only one who felt this way. I wanted to love this one. Your analysis is spot on.
Women aren't always strong. Like that's silly. And women also make mistakes, that doesn't make them dumb. Especially in the time period when this book is written, is has nothing to do with smart or weak it has to do with options. Also, it's commentary on the corruption of the wealthy, which does include Alice. How many wealthy wives turn a blind eye to their husband in order to remain extremely wealthy ? A lot. Louise was just young and looking for a way to take care of her brother.
Thanks for the honest review. I was on the fence on this one and thinking of listening to it on audio which would have most likely been a diaster.
I love your reviews Yun! They are not just great, but you always tell it like it is, good or bad, which I really appreciate 💛
Yun, once again you and I agree on a book. I found this book to be way too long with a very underwhelming conclusion. I gave this book a generous 3.5 stars (rounded up), but I think I should have left it at three stars. Another stellar, spot on review!
Excellent and very fair / balanced review, Yun. I have definitely had the experience you seem to have had here, where I find an overall story engaging, but overlong and convoluted, with some confounding character moments. Here’s hoping your next read is a more tightly written with more consistent characterization throughout the tale.
This is a fantastic review, Yun. I've just finished the book and I thought it was a mixed bag as well - some bits I loved and others really let the pace and flow of the narrative suffer.
I have this on my bookshelf but have been hesitant to pick it up. I do not like a unnecessarily fluffed up story! Glad I read your review:)
Oh yes! I agree wholeheartedly on your most astute points! Too much ‘Duh’ here. I might have this one. Not sure bc the cover throws me off. Dangit. Well if I do at least I’m warned.

I rate books based on my personal enjoyment. And my reviews provide an explanation of why I enjoyed/did not enjoy it, hence my talking about my love for strong female protagonists. It's all subjective. I'm glad you totally loved this book; my review doesn't take anything away from that. :)
Linda wrote: "Thanks for the honest review. I was on the fence on this one and thinking of listening to it on audio which would have most likely been a diaster."
Thanks, Linda! The book has a lot of different perspectives and time jumps, so listening to it may be a bit more challenging? Hope you enjoy if you go for this! :)
