Henry “Thunderstorm” Odell was born with paranormal abilities. He was also born a slave, the illegitimate son of an enslaved woman and her entitled owner. Despite appearing distinctly Caucasian, Henry identifies as being “colored,” and now lives in the colored community of a California Gold Rush town with his wife and children.
His appearance is not the only unusual thing about Henry. Much to his wife’s dismay, he can speak to the dead.
When a wealthy family hears about his spiritual talents, they implore him to rid their mansion of a homicidal ghost that is stalking their young daughter. Henry wants to help, but his wife has been threatening to leave him if he persists in this blasphemous behavior.
His choice becomes to follow her wishes or follow his conscience, which tells him that a young girl is in terrible danger, and that his help might be the only help coming.
