Dave Marsland Wonderful review, Lisa. I'd never heard of this book or it's author, but the subject matter is something of great interest to me. I loved the quotes you used. Added to the list!

Thank you, Dave. It is a brilliant book. It was long listed for the Booker in 2016 and won the Giller that year. It has only taken a decade for me to get to it. Perhaps it was waiting for me to grow into it as a reader. 🤔😁

It is a powerfully moving book, and I think you would be a good reader for it.

It was interesting to be reading this novel as Xi Jinping was in the U.S. And it has pointed out how much good we have in my country that we/I have taken for granted until very recently. Yep, timing.

Thank you, Laysee. It is both of those things. And with characters I came to care about. Well worth my time.

And it lead me to a few new to me pieces of classical music.

Candi What a lovely review, Lisa. This seems to be a very thought-provoking novel, and one that I'd very much like to read. It's good to understand the structure and the writing style ahead of time - so thank you for that :)

Jen, I'm not sure how you missed it; it won the Giller Prize that year. It is definitely worth considering when you are up for a challenging read.

Thank you, Ann. It certainly made an impact. I have a Chinese friend whose family is scattered all over the world due to these times.

Thank you, Antoinette. It certainly does get one to think about political circumstances in China, at home, and globally.

Candi, in addition to the story Thien tells, I found this novel to be a strong reminder of where we could be heading if we don't continue to grow our voices of protest. Scary, disturbing, brilliant, and relevant.

Sara Wow, Lisa, stunning review. I will definitely want to get to this as soon as I can, but I will also be aware that I need to schedule it when I can concentrate and absorb what the author is saying. Thanks.
