Knowing that HUMMER & THE BOY affected you more deeply than you expected is such a meaningful response to receive. I especially appreciated your understanding of Emmett’s guilt and the Love that has been there all along. I also appreciate your acknowledging the sadness in the story. Sadness is part of love, loss, and growing up, and stories can give children (and adults) a safe place to experience those feelings and talk about them. Your calling his mother’s words “the heart of the book” meant a great deal, because that is precisely where its message comes home. Knowing that you found those words genuinely comforting may mean even more. A story can be understood, but when its words offer genuine comfort, that is something else entirely. And I’m glad you enjoyed the goose facts in the back of the book, too!
