Enticing review. I'm with you on whodunits - I often don't care either. So the fact that you like this is a big plus for me.
A wonderful review of a phenomenal book! This is one where you can laugh and cry in the span of a moment.
This novel has been appearing in the Feed lately. I have not read Everett yet. I may start with another one of his but hope to get to this one too. Curious mix of humorous dialogue with a mystery
Love your review, Ken! Now I can see why this was named 'The Trees'... I will have to read this at some point in the future. I just finished a pretty epic read that spans back to DJT's time in office and the intro to the MAGA years - although it's less about him and more about our changing climate.

I'm in good company, then, Lisa! Sometimes I feel as if the whole world loves a mystery! Maybe I lost it after Curiosity (it lives in the woods out back) killed my cat.

Thank you, Ray. Your sterling review helped push this to the top of the tenuous TBR pile.

Thanks, Teresa, and I hope you enjoy his other books!
"If Everett wins a Booker (it's shortlisted), it'll be because of the wit."
Good luck with that. Booker Prize judges don't seem to have much of a sense of humor. I'll take that one step further and say the the Nobel Prize judges for literature seem to have no sense of humor, with the possible exception of their award to Bob Dylan. And the humor there was probably unintentional.

Amen and awomen to that, Paul. I was amused by the Dylan award, and I'm a poet (so, I guess, should be much more sympathetic to the line of thinking). Who knows. Maybe the voice distracts from the poetry, meaning I must recuse myself as a judge.
