Nhan Hey, what would you suggest reading to further grasp the mechanics of these systems?

Gavin Marshall I was alarmed when the author suggested that chat bots have some kind of agency that we should take account of when thinking about people’s relationships with them.

Nelson Zagalo Thanks for asking. I don’t think there’s one perfect substitute for Love Machines.

For the cognitive mechanics behind why LLM interaction can feel persuasive or intimate, Andy Clark’s "The Experience Machine" is much stronger. For the psychology of human-AI interaction, Tony Prescott’s "The Psychology of Artificial Intelligence". And for the classic precursor on technological intimacy, Sherry Turkle’s "Alone Together" still matters a lot.

Nelson Zagalo A new book on the subject that will probably become relevant:

"Artificial Intimacy: Who We Become When We Talk to Machines" (2026) by Sherry Turkle
