Wonderful review, K 💚 This has been on my TBR list for a while, and your review is a welcome nudge to remember to read it.
Again, you bring me something I did not know existed. Color me intrigued, K. That quoted passage is positively luscious!

Thank you so much, Margo. This is one of those novels that I wonder how I missed reading it over the years. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
Diane wrote: "One of my favorite books. No surprise that you loved it too."
Sometimes I think I want to splurge on every Persephone book and just read them for the rest of my days.
Canadian Jen wrote: "A lovely quote, K. Glad this one resonated with you!"
I was swept away to another time and place, Jen. 🤗
Laysee wrote: "Lovely review, K. This sounds like a book I'd enjoy."
Thank you so much, Laysee. I think of the quote you shared in your review of Wives and Daughters by Elizabeth Gaskell when I read books like this one. It was the quote by Gaskell's editor. It has stayed with me ever since I read your review.
Alison wrote: "Well-chosen quotation!"
Thank you, Alison! R.C. Sherriff wrote such a beautiful story of everyday people doing everyday things. A book that will definitely stay with me.

I didn't know about it until I began perusing the Persephone titles, Bonnie. Cornball that I am, I decided to read it in September. What a lovely escape from this present world! It's a simple story of an ordinary family on their annual vacation, but it resonated with me almost a century after it was written.
Karen wrote: "So glad you loved it K!
I enjoyed it myself."
Such a gem of a novel, Karen! I'm going to check out your review!

What is the Persephone link? And also, if you are stuck on Persephone as an escape, it says a lot. If you are escaping to the underworld, this place is looking pretty bad!

I did not even think of the Persephone analogy, Bonnie! It's perfect! So here is the Persephone story in relation to the publishing company:
Persephone Books published its first title in the spring of 1999. Founder Nicola Beauman’s original concept was to re-print a handful of 'lost' or out-of-print books every year, most of them interwar novels by women. The name Persephone was chosen as a symbol of female creativity, as well as of new beginnings (the daughter of Zeus is associated with spring).
Diane B and Antoinette sparked my interest in Persephone. They have read quite a few of their books. I tried to send the link to their website, but GR would not allow it. I'm going to try an email you the link.

Ahhh, so not the actual Persephone, no underworld connections. I love that we just look at her connection to spring, but don't mention she was Satan's consort. Either way, it sounds like a great project. I will check out their selection.

This cracked me up. Totally me. 🤣
K, A couple of years ago I received an unexpected inheritance of about $8,000 dollars. A friend suggested that now I could buy all the Persephone Books. Didn't work out that way, but it was a nice daydream.
What a perfect time to read this book, K! I really need to put this on my priority list. Fabulous review!

What a thrill to have an unexpected inheritance, Diane! Ok...now I want one so I can buy the Persephone Books complete library. 😄
Lori wrote: "What a perfect time to read this book, K! I really need to put this on my priority list. Fabulous review!"
Thank you so much, Lori! I think you'd really like this novel. It's a true literary beach read in every sense. 🤗
How perfect that you read it in September. I loved this book as well. Loved the quote you shared. Great review, K.
Great review, K! What a ringing endorsement! I'm glad you loved this one so much. I haven't heard of it, thanks for putting it on my radar. :)
Antoinette wrote: "How perfect that you read it in September. I loved this book as well. Loved the quote you shared. Great review, K."
Thank you, Antoinette. When I think of Persephone Books, I think of you and Diane. When I own them all one day, I'll have to post a plaque honoring you both! 😄
Yun wrote: "Great review, K! What a ringing endorsement! I'm glad you loved this one so much. I haven't heard of it, thanks for putting it on my radar. :)"
Thank you, Yun! It is a beautiful story, gently told, and still resonates almost a century after it was published. 🤗
Julie wrote: "Amen! This is an absolute gem. I wouldn't even trust a person who claimed they didn't like it!"
It truly is, Julie! I wish my grandparents were still alive so I could ask them if they ever read it. I love "discovering" books from another time and place.
I think that, sometimes, about my grandmother and my father. I'll wonder if they read something in particular. It bothers me now that I don't know if my father read Shirley Jackson's work. He would have loved her stories, and I wish I knew if he read them.

It's sweet that you know your father would have loved Jackson's stories. Was he an avid reader? The older I get, the more I want to talk to my grandparents and my dad...really talk to them. I think about them a lot when I read books from their time. By the way, my book store has The Witches of Worm! I'm picking it up tomorrow! I'm excited about it!
It is always so nice when a review takes me back to a book again, which yours did, K. I'm with you on discovering the old books that have slipped through the cracks.

Thank you for your lovely comments, Sara. Most of my favorite reads this year have been "old" treasures like this one.
Sometimes I can barely remember what actually happened during a happy time, but the feeling of having been happy there somehow stays much longer than the details do. That passage you chose made me think of that immediately. Maybe that’s why certain ordinary days become so precious years later - most of what happened has gone blurry, but somehow you still know you were happy.
No way! They had an available copy of THE WITCHES OF WORM?? It is meant-to-be.
My dad WAS a big reader, until he wasn't. My brother, sister, and I are all big readers and I think it frustrates all of us that my mother was never a reader, and my father was, but then abandoned the habit. I still pick up books that I know he would have loved. He had a preference for sci-fi, in particular.
