I love this series! I read all three books in a week. I'm glad you enjoyed the first as well.
I've been wanting to read this for a while. This review is just the kick I need to get started. I read a samples chapter and love it. Like a gritty version of Forgotten Realms novel.
I accidentally picked it up on release day and finished it within 24 hours. I couldn't put it down. I agree that, sure you can see the strings being pulled, but that didn't matter because you were already so enveloped by the story that you felt for it all anyway. I was so sad that the other two were a month and two months away.
One of three books that got me into reading again (the other two being the mentioned Warded Man and Rothfuss' NoTW), so it holds a special place in my heart.
Weeks really upped the ante with his next series though.
Weeks got me back into being interested in sampling other fantasy authors. If not for him I wouldn't have read yours. Ka is a Wheel. :) P.S. The twists in the story keep getting better IIRC.
Was it the greatest book ever, did the characters jump from the page, was the world building epic.....nope
Did I enjoy the hell out of it and did it make me buy everything Brent weeks has written since...Hell yes
I like the first book in series, but I found that the other books seemed a little forced. Because of that it ruined the rest of the books for me.
I enjoyed this series and I'm currently reading the third book in the Lightbringer series which i can also thoroughly recommend -each book better than the last
Tony, I agree with you absolutely!!!! Every book he writes is an adventure and just plain experience!!! I am glad others get to enjoy it as much as i do:):):)
Mark, you are amazing and I love it that two of my favorite authors can see the value in each-others works:):):)
I loved the trilogy, and the prequel novella aswell. Just read the first book in the "Lightbringer"-series, and it is really good aswell. Had some issues with the magic system in it but the characters and the story won me over. Definetly Reading more Weeks.
I recently just finished it myself and absolutely loved it, I cant see why so many people dislike it.
Enjoyed the triology just thought david dalglish did a better job with the dance of cloaks - although I am loving the lightbringer series.
It has been a while since I first read the book when it was published as a very inexpensive ebook. I liked it a LOT despite it's inconsequential "first book" faults. I liked it and the next 2 books so much that I bought them in paper.
Good lord, two of the only popular fantasy books that I dislike, you love. I must be doing something wrong.
Do you judge the books by the covers mark?
Don't get me wrong, some of the books you rated 5 star actually deserved it, but you seem rather loose with the 5 star ratings.
Loved the series. It was one of the first I got for review, and devoured the three novels when they arrived. Thoroughly enjoyable, but as you say - everything we love about classic fantasy, updated for the modern reader. I've been meaning to do a re-read for ages.
Love this series! Was sucked in the whole way through , where as I like Lightbringer, but it just sort of stalled for me in the broken eye. I don't know, hopefully books 4 and 5 of the series suck me back in.
Read all three books in the series, but there was lots I disliked. His view of women was a teenshy bit difficult for a woman reader.
I inherited this book when a friend was having a clear out and it's been sat on my not sure shelf, not quite making it to my to read shelf but I think it's due an upgrade, great review and thanks for changing my mind ^_^
I loved this series as well as Warded Man, I am even more excited about your books. 😀 I need to read this Brent Weeks trilogy over. I was not a fan of the newest series he wrote though.
I loved book one - liked book two, but ended up HATING the end of the trilogy... Not because I'd have wanted it to end differently, but because it didn't fit the tone of the books at all... So he might have felt bad about the whole thing more than about this one book in particular? :)
I've tried starting it twice. I have the full trilogy in a giant book bc my sister recommended it. I love his writing, but I think I need to be in a specific kinda mood to continue simply due to the themes
I really enjoyed this trilogy. So much so that i told my daughter when she has a son his name will be Kylar. I enjoyed lightbringer as well.
My problem with this series is that the middle book suffers from very serious middle book syndrome. Basically, the entire second book is the main character struggling with his inner demons. I struggled bigly finishing it. This series also has a big thing going on with all the female characters falling into the madonna/whore dichotomy, which drove me crazy.
However, the Lightbringer Series is just pure awesome-sauce.
I'm on the final book of this series and have enjoyed it quite a bit. The series in general hasn't been mind blowing it is a good read, fun and well paced. Keeps you reading for sure.
This was the first series of his i read and loved them. Im a huge fan of the Lightbringer series too.
I’m reading this now and quite enjoying it as well! It’s super refreshing, very unique.
Great review, Mark.
and that (thanks to your very compelling reviews 😂) is a must read for me for sure!! oh my tbr is just gonna spill all over the place and make a mess of everything...

I still need to do that :o
Though now all I can remember about the book is ... something about garlic.
Excellent review and spot on. Having read 7 of Weeks' books i concur that he has the uncanny ability to make me kep flipping pages and lose much needed sleep. I heartily recommend the Black Prism and diving into the Lightbringer series as well.
I really enjoyed his Night Angel trilogy and got my son into reading fantasy fiction through lending it to him.
It might have been your recommendation/review that caused me to add this book to my list. I highly enjoyed The Warded Man too. I listened to both that book and this one.

"takes what I loved about 80's fantasy and grows it up"
I love that line. That, right there, turns this from a want-to-read to a must-read.
