The most interesting AI thriller for me is Artificial Wisdom.
I'm always looking for the next good book, but explicitly went looking for one on artificial intelligence. It was the best prospect I could find at the time. I found it right as crossed over 1,000 ratings, which is my minimum threshold for book of the month. No regrets. Great book. Give it a read. Tell me what you think.
A sequel, Inifinite Wisdom, is coming out in November. The shortcoming of the Artificial Wisdom is that is just ends relatively abruptly, paving the way for a sequel. It didn't feel like enough of a proper ending. It didn't really standalone. A story has a beginning, a middle, and an end. This one didn't have a full-fledge ending. Virtually everyone agrees. That being said, technothrillers generally don't have good ending, though there are exceptions.
I also like the Aggressor series by F. X. Holden. It has AI and drones and I like what it did with it. One of the concepts is over the top, but like I say skiing, if you don't fall down, you're not trying. Start with the book Aggressor, then Beachhead. These are both good and have AI. The third book, Swarm takes drones to another level. Might scratch your itch. That is also the book where most fizzle out on the series and don't finish the book, but ... give it a start. He also has a Future War series (same characters and some of the same AI, set prior to the Aggressor series).
I also like the Murderbot Diaries series. This series is mostly novellas. Just bang through the first three and see if it hooks you. This showcases the potential of personal computational assistance always available.
The ones that stay with me are not the machines that hate us. They are the ones that keep scoring a day until a slow Tuesday looks like a failure.Steve, your note about Artificial Wisdom ending too soon lands for me. A story about judgment needs a place where someone still has to own the call. If that handoff waits for the sequel, the fear stays technical. I want the moment a person is allowed to keep the doubt the score wants gone.
What concept stuck with you after the plot moved on?
One AI concept I’ve explored in An Unlikely War is what happens when artificial intelligence is given increasing control over advanced military weapons. The story features AI-controlled hypersonic missiles that initially appear almost impossible to defeat, raising the question of whether the real danger is the weapon itself or how much decision-making humanity is prepared to hand over to AI. It was an interesting idea to explore because the technology can be extraordinarily powerful while still having an unexpected vulnerability.An Unlikely War
