Warren Fournier You have me laughing, though surely it's my kidneys.

mark monday Our organs are to blame for everything! Blasted organs, always making us do things we don't want to do.

Lynne King Interesting.

Mark's endless quest Let's not forget Ebenezer Scrooge 'A crumb of cheese 'or ' .A blot of mustard' . As a stiff upper lip men in Victorian/Edwardian England one could be faced with an invasion of hell itself , and still seek for any explanation beside the bleeding obvious ;)

mark monday Too true. Organs aren't the only enemy of humankind! Condiments & cheese are also notorious villains and very very manipulative

message 7: by David (new)

David Cheese particularly so for the lactose intolerant.

Debi Cates Poor poor Liver man. Maybe some broccoli would have helped send the Listener on his way? Or better yet, a big ol' pot of beans. Yeah, that woulda done it.

message 9: by mark (new)

mark monday Beans are unfortunately another enemy of humanity. Oh the embarrassments they have caused! Do not trust beans, condiments, cheese, or one's own organs. All of them have it out for you.

Debi Cates Ah yes, the Pythagorean theorem based on his dislike for beans. Beans, condiments, cheese, the three sides to a tangle.

mark monday Ha!

Debi Cates I have to say, Mark, that your review far exceeds the pleasure I got from the short story itself, not one of his great works. And at some point, early on, momentarily I was reminded of The Diary of a Nobody--nothing goes right for the Liver man just as nothing went right for Mr Pooter . I suspect your humorous review is what caused that comparison to come to my mind.

I adored Blackwood's The Willows.

mark monday A lesser work for sure, although very enjoyable in its way.

I absolutely love The Willows! One of my very favorite stories. As Blackwood is one of my favorite authors. I try to read my favorite authors during my birthday month, so it is Blackwood, Vance, and Heyer so far in September

message 14: by Debi (new)

Debi Cates Happy Birthday! Hope you have a good one and great year. What a wonderful treat from you to you--I am going to do the same (June).

message 15: by Debi (new)

Debi Cates Algernon Blackwood, Jack Vance and and Georgette Heyer. What a combo! How fun you are.

message 16: by mark (new)

mark monday Thanks Debi! :)

message 17: by Mir (new)

Mir Blackwood is not for the lily-livered.

(Spanish liver, hígados, is also associated with courage, coincidentally)

message 18: by mark (new)

mark monday LOL Miriam!
