THE KERNOZ OATH — 122,000 words
In August 1984, five children on a small island off the coast of Brittany found an injured man hiding in a wartime bunker. They fed him for eleven days and swore never to tell. One of them didn't come back, and the island buried an empty coffin.
Forty-two years later their old schoolmaster is found dead below that bunker, and the four survivors — who haven't spoken since — have to work out what they actually did.
Be warned about the pace. This is a slow book. The evidence is ticket counterfoils, council minutes and a boy's school exercise book, and the tension comes from a village that answers questions honestly and is never asked any. If you're after a fast thriller this isn't one. If you read Peter May, Ann Cleeves or Jean-Luc Bannalec, it might be.
