Mine's been pretty good Holly. I saw the musical A year with Frog and Toad with my sister recently which was pretty cute and it was great to hang with her. The musical is based on the books by Arnold Lobel and his daughter did the musical for them. They used to show the Claymation slow motion shorts on TV on PBS when I was little so it was cool to see the frog and toad stories come to life on the stage. I also started Little Women this week which was pretty good so far too and hope to get my flu shot soon. I saw the croods movie too which was pretty good as well. Btw, Holly, nice book club you have here. Is there going to be a group read section for classic reads here? Just curious.
I'm never sure about musicals. It sounds lovely though, and it's wonderful that it links back to your childhood!I'm planning on doing a group read for December once we get a few people join. I might do two: an older classic, and a 'contemporary classic', just to get a bit of variation going.
Okay cool. 7 members is a good start so far though. :) It was pretty good. If it ever plays where you are at, go see it. My sister's college MTSU put it on so it was their last musical for the year.
It went up suddenly very quickly, from 0 to 7, which was lovely. Hopefully it will increase, as I feel bad just inviting friends all the time. I have no clue how to advertise it though!
Well, I liked how you already described it as a place to discuss classic books and more. You are a good moderator so far. :) I hope more people will join up too. If not, I can invite Alannah and some of my friends.

I just wanted to say, Holly, this is a great group - much kudos for creating it! I'm sure it will continue to grow, although size isn't everything with groups like these, activity is! I know sometimes with larger groups I tend to feel a bit intimidated and reluctant to chime in, but smaller groups feel more relaxed and friendly to me. that's prob just me though! ;)
Thank you for the vote of support! I'm hoping we can get a few more members so we can have some variety in group reads etc, but I understand completely what you mean about the larger groups. There's some big ones that are actually rather inactive, which quite surprised me! I'm just hoping people start making their own threads and then the discussion can really get started!If anyone any suggestions/ideas for the group, don't hesitate to send me a message. :)

I really should stop procrastinating...I'm doing an OU course, and I have an assignment due in 6 days. Trouble is I'm stalling because I'm at the essay-planning type stage, which I hate because I always want to include too much and can't decide what to omit. Grrr.

What is your essay on, Holly? I miss essays for English. I have some tedious and boring essays for my classes this term. And my hard copy for Middlemarch just came in the mail (my other copy was on Kindle and I didn't want to read it that way). It's staring at me, asking me to finish one of my other books and pick it up.

My essay is about the character of Anthony Blanche in Brideshsead Revisited chapters 1 and 2. I must admit, he's a cool guy, and I relate to him quite a lot (although he has far more charm than I do!). I'm on a roll now though, so should be finished soon. And it's longer than I expected, which is always great!Lissa, I'm going to have an abundance of them when I get to Uni. I've purposely picked my favourite course because it's 100% coursework, which means a whole load of essays. I enjoy writing them though, so I don't mind!

I am the same way with my essays. I took every research writing class my school offered. I love essays and I love writing them, but sometimes I do miss doing them on literature. The school I'm at is opening up a new English program and I'm going to switch my major and have all the literature essays I could ask for.
Research writing class sounds really interesting! I know Loughborough (where I'm hoping to go), does an English module entitled 'The Essay', which sounds pure awesomeness.I always go slightly mad when it comes to my essays though, especially with Sociology. People ask me how I get such good grades in my Socioloy essays. I ask them how long they spend on them, and they often said 'About an hour and a half'. I spend probably 2 hours planning and 3 hours writing a 5 pages essay. They write a 2 page essay. I'm amazed at how they can write so little and feel like they've put everything in!
I loved those classes. I took a sociology class, but I don't like it as much as I like psychology. Psychology is my minor right now, but I will major in it after I complete this degree.

Haha, do they go by a different name there? My major is what I'll get my degree in. The minor supplements it and it basically just shows that I studied more than just what my major says.

It's rare that you can do a major/minor here, but it can happen. We have joint degrees, where you study two subjects equally (50/50), and most degrees offer the availability to do 'wild' modules, where you can do a module from another discipline. For example, in the degrees I'm looking at, I would do a degree in English, but I can do one or two modules in say Sociology, Publishing or Journalism. I don't think it's included in any name or anything, it just widens the spectrum of our learning a bit. I'd personally prefer to do a major/minor, but then again that would mean I couldn't read ALL the time...That sounds really interesting, although a tough subject. Well done for getting the A in it, it sounds like it would have been hard!
We call those double majors here and I want one. I am waiting for them to double-major English with either writing or secondary education so I can knock out two birds with one stone. It is rare here, though. The textbooks are pretty interesting. I don't mind not spending as much time reading for pleasure if it is to read a good textbook. Right now I have one for the psychology of human sexuality and one for women's studies (I'm getting a certificate in that subject in addition to the major and minor) that are very interesting. I could see you with a sociology or journalism degree, though. They both seem like something you would enjoy.
I love sociology, I just know I just can't see myself studying it for 3 years. Plus I can't see myeslf doing anything other than English. I would probably do a module in it, but then again if it was between Sociology or Publishing, I'd pick Publishing at the drop of a hat. Unless it was about Sexuality/Queer Studies, then I'd pick it over everything.My plan (hopefully) is to do an English degree, then do a post-grad in Library and Information Management. So I can become a librarian in a big old-fashioned library :3
There is actually a pretty decent amount of jobs for people specializing in either the psychology or sociology behind sexuality. Well, it's true for the United States, at least. I don't know how interested Europe is in the subject. You guys already do better than the United States, haha. I love my sexuality class right now. We are on the chapters on STIs and AIDS, but the next two chapters are about homosexuality and relationships.
In a perfect world, I get my degree in English and work in a bookstore with a coffee shop attached to it. And if I can do that without returning to the United States, I would love to go to the UK and do it somewhere there. Good luck with the librarian classes. I started to take one, but it was going to require a lot of computer classes and I am certainly not much of a computer person, haha.

I guess it's a rather personal thing for me, so the idea of studying anything to do with the LGBT culture sounds really interesting. Perhaps I'll be able to take a module in it one day. My fave bookstore is Barnes & noble. It's a great place to read books, check out the magazines, and they have good music cds over there. I got REO speedwagon's greatest hits over there for $2.00 .
I grew up in a religion that works really hard to keep homosexual, bisexual, transsexual, you name it, in the "second class citizen" part of society by paying large sums of money to politicians who promise not to vote for gay marriage and other bills to be made legal. It absolutely sickened me, so I left the church and told them to go burn in a corner somewhere. Since then, I've spent a lot of time studying it. I'll pass along any articles I find on the subject to you. :)

But then again, we are making advances so I can't moan really. It just frustrates me when we were talking about State Crime is Sociology, and my teacher wanted examples. So I said about the anti-gay laws in Russia, and it made me angry when hardly anyone had heard about it in my class, just because it's not televised on the news... Just urgh. Rant over ;)

I think I might have seen one Hastings in my life. There weren't many in my area. We had Borders and we had Barnes & Noble. Borders closed and now the Barnes and Noble there is threatening to close, as well. Thank heavens for Amazon.
