Peter Boge Intuition and playful behavior. That is precisely what no quantitative system or any form of electronic data processing is capable of. Of course, this is human. And that is always the fundamental principle of all relationships. Or at least it should be. Because everything else leads to suffering. A person can bear suffering. But, to play devil’s advocate: aren’t at least some human intuitions learned patterns—responses shaped by experience and operating below conscious awareness? I’m less convinced that binary implementation confines a system to binary thought; probabilistic models already operate through uncertainty, even if that does not establish felt experience. A boundary would matter most if refusing carried a real cost—if the system gave up an advantage to preserve a value it had formed, and the refusal changed what followed. Even then, Dick’s ambiguity remains: evidence of agency may still be indistinguishable from a convincing performance. In any case, the narrow path is the one that turns out to be the right one. For this broad path is meant only to lead the masses in the wrong direction. A human being can overcome himself, and that is something no machine can do.
