Esther is a Primm. Her grandparents were Ezekiel (Pawdad) and Pearl (Gran) Primm. Her mother is Annie, who is only mentioned a few times in the story. Annie left when Esther was a baby, leaving her in Clarissa’s care.
Clarissa cared for Esther for the first year of her life. She is also Esther’s half-great-aunt, because Clarissa and Ezekiel (Pawdad) Primm are estranged half-siblings through their father, Jeppson Reed, a man who never really acknowledged either of them during his lifetime.
Adeline is Clarissa’s niece through her husband, Obadiah. Clarissa and Obadiah raised Adeline as their own daughter from the time she was six years old.
So, for a short period of time, Esther and Adeline were essentially raised together under Clarissa’s roof, making them something like sister-cousins, until Gran came and took Esther to the hills.
As for the baby in the cave, that was Esther’s baby, whom she had when she was very young. The baby was stillborn, which is mentioned in Book 1, and Clive was the father.
