YES! I’m almost finished and this is my exact thinking. There are many rave reviews and I thought maybe I’m missing something, but am relieved my thoughts align with this review.
Completely agree! I couldn't even finish it--I finally gave myself permission to return it to the library as it felt like a chore every time I opened the book!
I'm also in agreement; finally gave up. And why is every book now 400 pages long? Where are the editors?
I'm half way through and considering not finishing. The length, the mentioned revisionist history, plus too many characters, many of whom are wholly unnecessary and unitstresting and pages and pages of basketball and dust...why??
I enjoyed it more than you did overall, but totally agree that the characters didn't feel real! They all sort of had the same detached voice (and yes modern views). And the historical heart happening off page was a gripe for me too - it didn't feel like it quite fit with the way the rest of the story was told. Or maybe it just tried to fit too much in between the historical atrocities and home for unwed mothers and rabbits foot killer!
I 100% agree! I found the acknowledgment and author’s note to be infinitely more interesting than the story itself. History is important, and I feel that this story missed the mark.
I completely agree. And I would add this to your list of criticisms: The scarecrow?!?! The soul/ghost/whatever, was inside the scarecrow!? It was a total wft moment for me when I got to this part.
I just purchased this book, but I’m not sure I can make a go of it. Just not what I need in my reading life now.
