A question for the group before any book talk: how often have you caught yourself seeing a pattern you could not explain away, and what did you do about it? I spent 388 pages on that exact tension, so I am biased. I think the honest answer is more interesting than either "coincidence" or "conspiracy."
The novel: Peter Alba Longa can find a pattern in a dropped fork. A rationalist philosophy professor at UCLA, he teaches four hundred students that every miracle has a mechanism. Then his most brilliant student vanishes into a secret order called Trinity, and a number starts appearing everywhere. To bring her home, Peter must walk into a war between two ancient orders: one sworn to set a world-breaking truth free, the other sworn to keep humanity in the dark. The finale takes place inside a real location: the Initiation Well in Sintra, Portugal. Do not google it before reading. You will ruin the best chapter.
