I was trying something a little different with those scenes, and it is clear from your comments that I did not execute the idea as well as I had hoped.
The first meeting between Elizabeth and Caroline is intentionally very brief and takes place during Jane's wedding breakfast. My goal was simply to have the two women meet, with Caroline recognizing that Elizabeth was an attractive young woman who might one day capture her brother's attention, just as Jane had.
Their second meeting is also brief. In the revised version, Elizabeth introduces Lady Helen as the Countess, and Caroline quickly excuses herself before she learns Elizabeth's identity. At that point, she does not yet know that Elizabeth has become Mrs. Darcy.
It is not until their third and final meeting that Elizabeth is formally introduced as Mrs. Darcy, making the revelation a genuine shock to Caroline.
After receiving similar feedback from my beta readers, I revised the book to clarify these scenes and eliminate the inconsistency. I appreciate you pointing it out, and I hope the revised version reads much more smoothly.
