Thank you so much for this review! Being a Knausgård fan and having greatly enjoyed The Morning Star, it is a relief to find someone that feels that same way I do about this book.
Same here, Lori — glad to hear I'm not alone in my disappointment! I'm planning to give the third book in the series a try in the hope that he turns it around.
Just finished the book and have pretty much the same opinion. I truly hope the Third Realm will be better.
Great review. I like Knausgaard as well and found Morning Star thoughtful and exciting. The Syvert portion of the novel was interesting, but the rest of the novel was mostly a snooze.

Agree this was a letdown after the first book of the series. Not sure about the third at this point.
Feel the same way, Ken. I imagine if Knausgaard were less famous, an editor would have had a field day with this and the result would be a much better book!
Yeah agreed on many points. I think the book may have been better had the focus principally been on Syvert, Joar, Syvert's parents, Alevtina, & Alevtina's parents. I personally found all the Vasya passages a totally pointless distraction - but maybe Knausgaard will find some way of clarifying their function in the third instalment, which I will definitely read. However I do think 2 is a bit harsh, it was still a readable book, even if the bloat and periodically dull passages were more common than typical. Then again, perhaps the disappointment is intensified because it failed to meet what we have learned to expect from a Knausgaard novel...
Completely agree with this review - this book has been my struggle.
Can someone reassure me that things get back on track for book three in the series?
I was aghast at how fucking boring and unintelligent Vasya’s essay was
