David Gemmel was so fantastic. I read the Drenai Saga in chronological rather than publication order (Wich worked well as I had fond memories or a handful of chapters from Waylander during a silent reading class at school some number of decades earlier). Druss was not my favourite protagonist, although I had a lot of fun with a certain friend and companion of his. I don't think Gemmel put a foot wrong in the whole saga. Also recommend "White Knight Black Swan" and "Rhyming Rings"
Yeah, I didn't read Gemmell in publication order either. I've perhaps read a dozen of his novels by now, and he's always been my go to for entertaining escapist fantasy. The great battles, the grand loves, the pull of destiny - you always know what you're going to get, and sometimes, that's exactly what you need.
I have to say though (note I'm only a third of the way through) I was surprised how clunky Legend is. Perhaps I shouldn't be - it was his first novel, after all, and I can see the themes that he'd return to time and again. But I was expecting this to be a five star, and I'm not sure that will end up being the case.
Won't stop me returning to his worlds, though.
