Squire Red Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson takes a realistic and scientific approach to the colonization of Mars. I found it fascinating, though the economics of the venture in 1992 seem suspect in 2026 (the year the colonization began in the novel).

Colin When you ask about published science, I would ask whether you mean published science that is theoretical or that has already been reduced to practice? If it's the former, Tau Zero by Poul Anderson would qualify. The Bussard ramjet has been published and even though the original concept has been shown not to work, other articles describe a variant that should work. Similarly, I think all the science in The Martian by Andy Weir derives from published work.
