Nick Lavitz Dear Readers, BookTokers and BookStagrammers,

In a dance as old as time, a new author seeks to escape the black hole of invisibility by drawing a little attention to his first published work.

Is it any good? I will only know if one or more of you are willing to read it and let your respective audiences know, but I'm putting it out there after years of work so I pretty much am betting everything on the belief that I have written something worth reading.

Please may I ask those of you with a passing interest in Urban Fantasy to consider reading my novel, Past Mistakes, which will be published on August 4th, 2026.

An earlier release of the first three chapters garnered an average of 4.61 right here on Goodreads, and the full manuscript is now 100,000 words and a complete novel. It is written by a human being (unless we all live in a simulation, but I digress).

The Novel
Emily Voss gets paid to banish demons that mostly aren't there. The exceptions are becoming a problem.

Fake exorcisms pay the rent: salt, a few words in Latin, a little theater — and whisky afterward, for the guilt. Emily's made peace with being a fraud. It beats remembering what happened the last time she tangled with a real demon.

Then a job at a New York hotel turns out to be the real thing, and it's only the first. Possessions across the city are multiplying. Not random; coordinated. Directed by something with a plan, and Emily keeps getting in the way.

Every thread she pulls leads back to the past she buried. And the enemy holding the other end has every advantage. Worse: they're much, much closer than she realizes.

Jessica Jones meets The Dresden Files and Kat Drummond in this dark urban fantasy debut. Theoretically book one in a series.
