Yalla Balagan Thanks for the (public) correction, GR Martin. If only there was a technology where we could communicate through private messages...

Socraticgadfly While Crabapple may be nostalgic for the Bund, I see no call by her to resurrect it.
As for your second-last paragraph? Ohh, wrong, or Not.Even.Wrong.
As for your last paragraph, Palestinians also have a country. Oh, I've also read both Ilan Pappe and Shlomo Sand, and I'll just leave that at that.

Yalla Balagan Jordan is the Arab section of the mandate, gadfly. They have a country. Let's leave that at that.

message 5: by Dvora (new)

Dvora Treisman I looked at the book on Amazon a few days ago and found the reviews interesting. Most of them see the book as a condemnation of zionism, and they support that condemnation. I thought I might read it just to find out more about the Bund that I've often heard about, but if it misrepresents things, I might just as well leave it alone and find something else to read.

Yalla Balagan Oy, GR Dvora. This book may have some sound historical data in it but the manipulation is unbelievable. What is omitted is purposeful. What is included, is redacted. The purpose is to smear Zionism and it is done with Goebbels-like fervor. How sad. How evil. How misguided. The comments alone should tell you how happy the haters are with this pamphlet. Even the illustrations are AI-ish. Absolute filth. An insult to the memory of the Bundists. Even the Marxist ones among them would not stoop so low.

message 7: by Socraticgadfly (new)

Socraticgadfly HamAss? Speaking of smears. And, no, the illustrations aren't an insult to Bundists, either.

On Jordan? I know the deal Israel made with Jordan and Abdullah even before official independence. See, I've read Ilan Pappe. That's how I know ethnic cleansing started even before the Nakba.

message 8: by Yalla (new)

Yalla Balagan "See, I've read Ilan Pappe Ilan Pappe. That's how I know ethnic cleansing started even before the Nakba." - This hilarious quote tells me everything I need to know. Can't argue with that level of mastery! You win professor gadfly! Let me erase all I wrote. I take it all back. Pappe to the rescue! Hilarious! Give me more jokes, I need the laughs!

message 9: by Katie C (new)

Katie C Israel is committing a genocide and deliberately targeting and killing children to destroy the population of Gaza and West Bank

message 10: by Steven (new)

Steven Henderson Let me sum up your review “the world cannot be better, don’t look to the past, this is as good as it gets. If the world is barbaric, we should become even more barbaric to make sure we are the ones dolling out suffering and not suffering ourselves"

message 11: by Tadashi (new)

Tadashi So, your conclusion is that the Israeli Jews only rational choice is to commit genocide by killing all Palestinians?

message 12: by Philip (new)

Philip Walker If it has a Zionist bad review it must be a very good book. I'll buy based on this review.

message 13: by Reader (new)

Reader Well written. “Hereness” did nothing to save the Jews of Europe. The entire book dances around this stark truth. Zionism is the only way for a Jew to be safe and at home.

message 14: by Rima (new)

Rima Wait: You say "Molly Crabapple writes with genuine verve, and her poor great-grandfather Sam Rothbort is a charming thread through a century of catastrophe. The problem is the loom." So basically "she's a good writer and the book is engaging, but I do not agree with her ideology and conclusions" merits only one star? I don't get it.

message 15: by Robert (new)

Robert Zionism = Nazism. End of story.

message 16: by Yalla (new)

Yalla Balagan I appreciate your knowledge, depth, and eloquence, GR Robert. What an asset to the Goodreads community!

message 17: by Yalla (new)

Yalla Balagan Hitler, too, was a charismatic vegetarian who loved dogs. Nevertheless, I disagree with his ideology and conclusions. Do you get it now, GR Rima?

message 18: by Mahtab (new)

Mahtab Safdari It seems some have forgotten winter is coming... 🌰🌰🌰
Thank you for this outstanding review, GR Yalla.

message 19: by Quo (new)

Quo Much of what Yalla intones about Molly Crabapple's much-heralded, recent book (4.6 G/R rating) is interesting but labeling the author a "smug Manhattanite" points to a certain lack of objectivity, much as would be the case if Yalla had been termed a "smug Israelite".

message 20: by Yalla (new)

Yalla Balagan Have you ever spoken to a Manhattanite, GR Quo?
