Interesting to hear about the magic system being underexplained. I guess that stems from it originally being a fanfic and the author having to scramble to turn it into something original for trad publication. I'm not sure if I'll pick this up as I think I'd rather read the fanfic, but nice to read an honest review of it!
Yes I think the same, I think shes tried to convert from one to the other but just failed to explain, what things mean. Some I worked out purely knowing HP, other bits i found myself Googling to actually figure what it meant. I could take a stab at some of the system was trying to mimic but the terminology is used frequently but not well explained at all. I don't think I'd read it again, glad I did but enjoyed other books more.
