Awesome review Kevin! Bookgasm puts an experience I've had into a single word. Well done!
I love this review! I need to reread this book. And I think every subsequent edition of this novel should include your "Harry Met Salvatora bookgasm" quote on the dust jacket.

Thank you, @Matthew and @Glenn, you are both too kind.
I had a cinematic image flash through my mind of Glenn, in a library, saying to the librarian, "I'll have what he's having." : )
Anne wrote: "Wonderful, wonderful review, Kevin! Thank you, I must read this book! : )"
Thank you, @Jill & @Anne!
His style isn't for everyone: as with Rushdie's Midnight's Children, it requires a high level of commitment from the reader.
Ah, but when you stick that pin in the book, do you know which Aureliano or Arcado it's referring to?
;)
Cecily wrote: "Ah, but when you stick that pin in the book, do you know which Aureliano or Arcado it's referring to?

As with Midnight's Children, the book totally loses you and you find yourself going, So, who was he/she again?.
Doesn't detract from its greatness though.
I'm sure that Fifty Shades' story line doesn't lose anyone! : )
Ah, but I keep notes, so it's less of a problem. ;)
And Fifty Shades? I have no idea, and no intention of finding out.

Thank you for reading and commenting, Paul.
It's impossible to disguise my admiration for the writing of Márquez.
Would love to hear your thoughts when you do tackle it.
Suzanne wrote: "Bookagsm?! I've still not read this author. Too many books.."
Thanks for reading, Suzanne. : )
Hope you're not too frustrated by the site's new format?
Great review. I read this in my 20s and really need to reread it. Also, I have never read Rushdie. I know, I know......
Lovely review, Kevin, I have had this on my list to read for too long, since I read Love in the Time of Cholera. I know, I really need to set a deadline for some of these!

Whaaaaat?
Never read Rushdie?
I have asked that you be escorted off the Goodreads' premises without delay! ; )
Thanks for reading my review, Cathrine.
And Midnight's Children is well worth a visit, in my humble opinion.
Cheri wrote: "Lovely review, Kevin, I have had this on my list to read for too long, since I read Love in the Time of Cholera. I know, I really need to set a deadline for some of these!"
Thank you, Cheri.
The cliché of 'too many books, so little time' is apposite to us all.
And I was so looking forward to reading your recommendation Perfume River until I discovered it wasn't set for release until November! : (
I have been meaning to read this for quite some time. My favorite author is Isabel Allende who is often compared to Marquez, and I love magical realism. Bookgasm what a great new word.
Thanks, Brina.
I often see Allende's name mentioned in the same breath as magical realism. I must add her work to my TBR list (in fact, I shall do that now).
Louis de Bernières' Latin American trilogy of books are written in the style of Márquez and Carlos Ruiz Zafón has also run with the baton.
A lot of Latina writers have attempted realismo as well but are not always up to par with Allende, Cristina Garcia being the best of the bunch. House of the Spirits is actually the end of a trilogy but was written first and has the most realismo in it. I have yet to find this genre done well by US writers in comparison to their Latino counterparts.
Brina wrote: "A lot of Latina writers have attempted realismo as well but are not always up to par with Allende, Cristina Garcia being the best of the bunch. House of the Spirits is actually the end of a trilogy..."
Ooh, I just added House of Spirits, Brina.
Which of her books do you think I should start with?
Anya wrote: "Great review, Kevin!! I cannot wait to read this one ^_^"
Thanks, Anya!
It's a gorgeous book, though the way the sentences are set out, like centurions preparing for battle, without paragraph breaks, takes some getting used to for newcomers to this amazing author.
Would love to hear your thoughts when you do take it on.
That is quite a colourful description, Kevin! I just got it delivered a few days back. Will find a quiet day to fully immerse myself in this saga. I think it deserves that much attention, at least! Can't wait to share my reading experience with you.
Shine wrote: "Great review! I purchased this book last month, will read it soon and share my review."
Thank you, Shine!
I love this book. Look forward to seeing your review!
Finally read this. Allende is still my favorite but she has Marquez to credit for starting the magical realism genre. Wow, just wow.

So pleased that you enjoyed his work, Brina.
Loved your review!
Kevin, great review....
And also I'm ashamed to confess that until now, I haven't read a single book from Marquez.
But, after your review here, this will quickly been altered.....
Thanks, again Kevin.

Magical Realism is a genre that isn't to everyone's taste, but I love it.
Just finishe it and... OMG! WHAT A BOOK!!!
Now I can appreciate your review in its whole. There's not a single sentence from Márquez which I cannot call magical! Oh the feelings! One has to read it, there's no way I can put it into words.
:)

And your review was wonderful.
David wrote: "Great review. I really have to get around to reading this book sooner rather than later."
Please do, David.
I had a quick rummage in your books list but couldn't see any magical realism-type books that might give me an indication as whether you might like it or not.
I'd love to read your thoughts when you do.
Beautifully summed here. Im a tiresome, plodding personality who cannot abide magical realism - except for... Gabriel Garcia Marquez!! And Yann Martel. He was a master. Sumptuous outlandishness fits his works well! Nicely put.

Lovely review, Kevin! You reminded me, too, about why this is a favorite of mine. I read it in Spanish the first time, which is unfathomable to me now, but at the time I was studying Spanish. I need to read this book again. Definitely one of the greats!
