You nailed it! I had the same reaction, so the enablers of this book clearly don’t have the same standards we do... I swear a lot of critics only read the first chapter and and base their review on the book’s potential...

Clearly I should use your example, Greta, and get back to the classics!

Our reviews scored a 97 on the Sympatico Scale Award Show. It's right up there with the Bleepin' Bookers.
You're right, Ken, Melchior's writing was in itself a hurricane—but I really liked that. If it didn't hurtle me along I might not have stayed with her story because, yes, the characters weren't going to make me invest in their futures! But I was glad Melchior gave them to us unfiltered. I'm guessing she knows a bunch of people who speak in nothing but expletives. If I look around close to where I live, I could easily find a similar bunch—with a few cultural differences of course.

I don't think so, Ken. The times are always changing and yours are perfectly valid observations as anyone else's. This was DNF for me. I didn't even attempt to persevere, life is short.

I can't explain it, but sometimes I read fiction rife with profanity and it doesn't bother me in the least, sounding completely natural. Other times, it clangs in my ears as I read. Why?
Must be me. Me and my inherent right but wrong (and sometimes wrong but right) thinking. ;-)

Thank you, Vesna! It's only right that we see both Category 1 and Category 5 opinions here!
