Great review Tanja! I can't wait to read this book!

Thank you Lena! I definitely recommend this book, it is truly illuminating in terms of current events.
The South has its own separate culture. It's not about religion; it's about tribalism, "us versus them." When the Confederacy lost the Civil War, they always said, "The South shall rise again." And now, here we are. Thanks for reminding me of this important book.

Correct! And then this culture has spread to other evangelicals not just through churches and sermons, but also through books, media, entertainment and the manosphere. This is what I couldn't quite fathom before reading this book. I live in Norway which is secular and the nonbelievers are in majority. Even if the christian ideological roots still exist, it's not pervasive unless you seek it out. There is a bible belt here too, but it doesn't have much political clout. Unlike its brethren in the US.
Great review, Tanja. You made me want to take a good look at this one. It's 6 years old, but it looks more relevant than ever.

The religion is how it spreads, but it seems like a superficial part. The religion adds the zealotry, self-righteousness, and whitewashing. (I'm a "Christian," so I'm a "goooood" person. Not!) The deeper part of the culture is the judgment, the hatred, the domineering, which provides a dopamine boost. "I'm finally free to attack, and it's such fun..." so they might say. Notice when Trump does his hate speech at the mic, how his supporters are laughing and cheering. They are finally free to unleash their hatred. The religion is just their excuse. The label for their tribe is "Christian," which makes their behavior okay. When John Wayne represents Christians, we're in real trouble.

Of all the books I've read about these troubling times, the John Wayne book was among the most relevant. It explains so much. Recommended!

Thank you Max! This book has lost none of its relevance, quite the opposite I'm afraid.

Well observed! It's just an excuse for tribalism and xenophobia and finally these evangelicals have a president that speaks their truth. To the detriment of the rest of us, and the world. No one in their right mind buys that Trump is a Christian. It's just an excuse to promote the patriarchy, where the rule of strength is the only one that counts and the weak suffer what they must.

Exactly! My latest book is "Strongmen" by Ruth Ben-Ghiat. She is a historian and an expert on authoritarian regimes, especially Mussolini. The current regime in the U.S. completely fits the historical pattern, including male dominance. But there is hope. Ruth also talks about how authoritarians fail. T is dying, and many in the cult are dumping him. The cult would never follow J.D. Vance. And now, Hungary and Albania are great role models for democracy. The next protests in the U.S. will be on T's birthday, June 14. Looking forward to it. Thanks for supporting us from afar!!!
