Alessandra Bassi Intriguing review, Margo! I liked it more than you did, but it was years ago, and I don't know how I would rate it today

Thanks for your comment, Alessandra 💚 Yes - maybe it resonated in that moment in time it was written more than today. I enjoyed it, but I wasn't as swept up in it as I thought I would be.

Alexandra (still busy, catching up! :) ) Excellent review, Margo! 🫶 I loved the film, but I have not read the book (yet?).

Ilse You evoked the allure of this novel, the narrative voice and the central theme excellently, Margo - Ishiguro depicts the clinging to work when the world crumbles under one's feet as a mechanism to cope so well (and relatably) here.

Pia G. Margo, I'm so glad you finally made it to the end of this one. I loved it too. And after reading the novel, I honestly can't imagine anyone other than Anthony Hopkins as Stevens.
Your comparison to Chekhov intrigued me. Is there a particular story you had in mind? I can see the resemblance in the quiet disappointments and the lives shaped by what remains unsaid, but I'd love to hear which Chekhov story the novel reminded you of most.

Thanks for your comment, Pia 💚 Perhaps I was thinking of the story "In the Cart" about the lonely teacher. It was that scene near the end of Remains of the Day where his heart is quietly breaking while they wait at a bus shelter - it had a similar tone somehow.
