Julie Thanks for this review, Ken. Reading your description, I was struck by how much of Hugo's life appears to have been a matter of survival—first in the war, and later in his struggles with alcohol. There does seem to have been a period when writers treated alcoholism as part of the job description rather than an occupational hazard; the reality, of course, was usually far less romantic.

Agreed. And artists often think they get their "best ideas" under the influence or relax after a hard day (or night) of "creativity" by drinking. Alcohol remains America's drug of choice, but there are contenders! Me, I've given up that aspect of the writing life. The hardest stuff I hit is a ginger kombucha.

My fave! Ginger-lemon is my weapon of choice these days. Fenugreek tea, amazingly good too.
