Richard: I am tempted to utter "Bah humbug!" I think the difficulty is in placing oneself in the milieu of rural (Yorkshire) Britain of 2 centuries ago when male/female relationships were extraordinarily different. The tempestuous relationship between Kathy Earnshaw & Heathcliff is one that I have long felt to be potentially incestuous, though this was long before anyone could apply for a DNA test. Beyond that, I will forever be amazed that the 3 largely cloistered Brontë sisters were capable of crafting the novels they did. However, I've been to Brontë country in West Yorkshire & that may have helped me to commune with their literary spirits. Bill

It didn't quite work for me, but its not the only classic I could not get into. I know it is a precious book to many. And if I take the context of her age and education into account it is an incredible achievement.
