July 2023: "Project Hail Mary" by Andy Weir > Likes and Comments
Is Andy Weir the Martian guy? I've watched that movie at least 15 times. Never got around to reading it.[OK, did some non-AI-googling. (Non-AI-googling should be a thing, right? Like non-GMO?)]
Well, I’m buying 2 books as soon as I post this puppy. The Martian and Hail Mary. I’ll read Hail Mary first, and I’m All In!
Yes! He also has Artemis but generally people who have read all three rank that one last.OOOOOOHHHHH Project Hail Mary is being made into a movie! THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!!!

Awesome!
Artemis is very different from The Martian and Project Hail Mary.
Project Hail Mary is the best book I've read so far this year. Easily. Haven't read Artemis yet. I hope the movie isn't terrible because I'm definitely going to see it.
Justin wrote: "I liked Artemis! Guess I’m the odd one out."I liked it too so you’re not the only one.
I'm definitely still going to read it at some point (Artemis). I'm sure it's still good even if it isn't as amazing as his other books.
Loooove this book so much. It's one of my most recommended books even to my non-scifi folk. Some have taken me up on it and enjoyed the heck out of it too.Tried Artemis but didn't finish it. I may try again.

Found it on IMDB, starring Ryan Gosling. Looking like a 2024 release.https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12042730/

Ooooohhh, that sounds good.
I just bought this and didn't realize it was the June book! I'm excited to get started on it. I loved The Martian, and am looking forward to more from Andy.

AMAZE AMAZE!! Also, Ryan Gosling has been cast as Rylan.
As usual because it's the 1st somewhere in the world... (and I'll be indisposed Saturday)THE DISCUSSION IS NOW OPEN!
Just remember to uncheck "Add to my Update Feed" when you mention a spoiler.
Please note that mention of (view spoiler) is considered a spoiler because the blurb and first pages don't mention it. I know most folks probably expect it, but let's play it safe and considerate.
I friggin loved this book. Everyone has their favorite tropes, character types, ways of writing... and this one just combined so many of my favorite things I couldn't not love it. I am a big fan of books with aliens, so this was a definite hit for me.
(That's all I have at the moment, I read it last year so am going to need to see some other comments to refresh my memory.)
Gertie wrote: "I'm definitely still going to read it at some point (Artemis). I'm sure it's still good even if it isn't as amazing as his other books."Read it, please! There is so much negativity about it out there, but it was really good! Project Hail Mary is the best by far, but Artemis was absolutely worth it. Only 300 pages.
Lupe wrote: "Oh man!!! I can’t wait to read this! I completely forgot about it lol!"Do it! Best book I've read in the last two years!
I read this last year too, not longer after its release. It was so much fun! Andy Weir definitely writes the plucky hero fighting against immense odds really well. I have no idea if the science was accurate, but he makes it interesting. And the characters... what else is there to say? This unlikely friendship is what makes the book. Am I wrong? I loved everything about it. And the ending.... not quite what you want to happen, but certainly the more realistic option than the unlikely, too good to be true, fairy tale ending. It was somehow just so -- fitting. The ending hit me with all the feels... happy, sad, bittersweet. I might have had a tear in my eye.
Let me say that I am THRILLED there's going to be a movie! Count me in. Opening day.

Being a fan of Weir I preordered it on Audible way back when and ripped right through it. It was hard to hit the stop button. I bought a paper copy for my wife and reread some of it. He just nailed it on all fronts with this novel. An Ray Porter's narration in Audible was AMAZING! AMAZING I TELL YOU!
I read this when it first came out. I really enjoyed it. A fun book. I did not expect the ending at all. The unexpected friendship was great (refreshing the alien wasn’t evil and out to destroy) - also something I didn’t expect. It was funny that Weir had one character dropping f-bombs and then doing completely the opposite with this book.
I read this one last year and I liked it better than Artemis (which I wasn't that into), but not as much as the Martian. I absolutely loved Rocky and I agree that it was good that he didn't go for the everything worked out perfect ending.I really wondered why a high school teacher would ever be picked for this mission, and the way he knew so much bothered me at times, but ultimately I enjoyed the book enough to overcome that (mostly.)
I must be in some alternative universe. I picked up Winter World by AG Riddle. Why did I think that was next? I guess when I finish that (I'm enjoying it), i'll back track and get Project Hail Mary.
I enjoyed the flashbacks and contemporary storyline (view spoiler) joined. But, when it was just Grace in the contemporary line, I found it very tedious. It felt like it drifted from manic stream of consciousness to just reading someone’s “to do” list page after page. So, I was glad when (view spoiler), just from an ease of reading perspective. There were moments that reminded me of part of the discussion of Sea of Rust. E.g. when Stratt says “I don’t care about morality, I care about saving humanity.” It's interesting to think about when/where our collective drive to survive stops being admirable and becomes malicious.
I've just started reading and story about dimming sun reminded me about the movie "Sunshine" i watched some time ago: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/It has good rating but i didn't like it that much for some reason.
Book however is amazing so far.
I think if you keep watching this topic you should have all the info you need to know what book is when. They are also on the homepage, though they will briefly drop off when going from to-read to currently-reading due to how GR manages the bookshelves.
Or just bookmark the book club folder which has the titles and months in the subject line of each topic: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
Yeah, that last suggestion is the best one I think.

In a strange way, getting discombobulated, I pretty much know from the comments that i'll enjoy this and not take a pass, though I usually only pass on a book due to time constraints.
I started on Tuesday and am already halfway through. I had read and LOVED The Martian and had this and Artemis in my kindle library, but they got lost over time because I'm a hopeless ebook collector...so I'm glad you guys gave me this nudge to pull them out.I love Weir's relatable writing style and characters. Nerdy doers are the best kind of people in my book and need to be highlighted for their awesomeness like this more often.
I enjoyed this book immensely. I never could decide which was my favorite, this or the Martian. What’s everyone’s favorite?
This one is better because of Rocky.“This is happy! Your face opening is in sad mode. Why, question?”
Lynn wrote: "I love Weir's relatable writing style and characters. So many great giggly geeky moments!
I couldn't put this book down! One of the best sci-fi novels I've read in a while, and we choose a lot of good ones here at AW. What I liked best were the main characters and the dialog between them. The novel shows that it's not necessarily the originality of the story that makes it great, but how it's told.
I think Weir has created a new genre "understandable hard science sci-fi and people end up really enjoying it. Some hard science is difficult to slog through because it's so techy, but Weir's is so accessible, and you end up learning a lot as you read.
Since I am a dolt and am reading the books out of order, i'll have this from the library in a week or so to undertake.
I adored this book. I was instructed to go into it totally blind. And it has easily landed itself in my top 5 favorite books of all time.
This isn't the standard Science Fiction "Space-cowboys, Orcs, and laser pew-pews". Its just a fantastic fiction about science.
Also, the humor is spot-on!
I love this book and the audio version is brilliant, conveying the new language in a way that can't really be done in print.
I'm so behind. I forgot to "download" it to my kindle when I traveled this past weekend, so I couldn't even start it while I was on the plane for 4 hours (2 there and 2 back). I'm so mad at myself lol.
Bonnie wrote: "I love this book and the audio version is brilliant, conveying the new language in a way that can't really be done in print."I agree the audio version is fantastic. The producers went over the top with Rocky's voice and it really made the book a fully immersive experience.
Overall the story was a fun end of the world/first contact book that reminds you not every book written in this genre has to be dark.
