Gertie For July we are reading Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir. Read anytime by July 1st, when the discussion will open.

For now, please do not discuss the story. You may however chat as much as you'd like about what format you've chosen, how far along you are, the blurb, an intro if there is one, the cover design, other books you've read by this author, etc. On the 1st you can begin discussing the contents of this book.

2021, 4.52 stars, 476 pages, $12.99 Kindle, $3.95 and up print, at library

"Ryland Grace is the sole survivor on a desperate, last-chance mission—and if he fails, humanity and the earth itself will perish.

Except that right now, he doesn’t know that. He can’t even remember his own name, let alone the nature of his assignment or how to complete it.

All he knows is that he’s been asleep for a very, very long time. And he’s just been awakened to find himself millions of miles from home, with nothing but two corpses for company.

His crewmates dead, his memories fuzzily returning, Ryland realizes that an impossible task now confronts him. Hurtling through space on this tiny ship, it’s up to him to puzzle out an impossible scientific mystery—and conquer an extinction-level threat to our species.

And with the clock ticking down and the nearest human being light-years away, he’s got to do it all alone.

Or does he?"

Nancy This a fun book.

message 3: by Harv (new)

Harv Griffin Is Andy Weir the Martian guy? I've watched that movie at least 15 times. Never got around to reading it.

[OK, did some non-AI-googling. (Non-AI-googling should be a thing, right? Like non-GMO?)]

Well, I’m buying 2 books as soon as I post this puppy. The Martian and Hail Mary. I’ll read Hail Mary first, and I’m All In!

message 4: by Harv (new)

Harv Griffin $20.68 - Both books bought.

message 5: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Yes! He also has Artemis but generally people who have read all three rank that one last.

OOOOOOHHHHH Project Hail Mary is being made into a movie! THIS MAKES ME SO HAPPY!!!!!!!

Ian (RebelGeek) Seal The audiobook is most excellent! Narrated by Ray Porter!

Awesome!

Artemis is very different from The Martian and Project Hail Mary.

message 8: by Flower (new)

Flower Both books are incredible! Never read Artemis though.

message 9: by Justin (new)

Justin Pickett I liked Artemis! Guess I’m the odd one out.

message 10: by David (new)

David Salisbury Project Hail Mary is the best book I've read so far this year. Easily. Haven't read Artemis yet. I hope the movie isn't terrible because I'm definitely going to see it.

message 11: by Nancy (new)

Nancy Justin wrote: "I liked Artemis! Guess I’m the odd one out."

I liked it too so you’re not the only one.

message 12: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I'm definitely still going to read it at some point (Artemis). I'm sure it's still good even if it isn't as amazing as his other books.

message 13: by Karen (new)

Karen Loooove this book so much. It's one of my most recommended books even to my non-scifi folk. Some have taken me up on it and enjoyed the heck out of it too.

Tried Artemis but didn't finish it. I may try again.

Jeff Koeppen Gertie wrote: "Yes! He also has Artemis but generally people who have read all three rank that one last.

Oh, wow! I had not heard this. I hope they do it justice. Any word on who will star in it?

message 15: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Found it on IMDB, starring Ryan Gosling. Looking like a 2024 release.

Ooooohhh, that sounds good.

message 17: by Kim (new)

Kim Calland I just bought this and didn't realize it was the June book! I'm excited to get started on it. I loved The Martian, and am looking forward to more from Andy.

AMAZE AMAZE!! Also, Ryan Gosling has been cast as Rylan.

Gertie As usual because it's the 1st somewhere in the world... (and I'll be indisposed Saturday)

THE DISCUSSION IS NOW OPEN!

Just remember to uncheck "Add to my Update Feed" when you mention a spoiler.

Please note that mention of (view spoiler) is considered a spoiler because the blurb and first pages don't mention it. I know most folks probably expect it, but let's play it safe and considerate.

message 20: by Gertie (new)

Gertie I friggin loved this book. Everyone has their favorite tropes, character types, ways of writing... and this one just combined so many of my favorite things I couldn't not love it.

I am a big fan of books with aliens, so this was a definite hit for me.
(That's all I have at the moment, I read it last year so am going to need to see some other comments to refresh my memory.)

message 21: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez Oh man!!! I can’t wait to read this! I completely forgot about it lol!

message 22: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Get on it! :-)

message 23: by David (new)

David Salisbury Gertie wrote: "I'm definitely still going to read it at some point (Artemis). I'm sure it's still good even if it isn't as amazing as his other books."

Read it, please! There is so much negativity about it out there, but it was really good! Project Hail Mary is the best by far, but Artemis was absolutely worth it. Only 300 pages.

message 24: by David (new)

David Salisbury Lupe wrote: "Oh man!!! I can’t wait to read this! I completely forgot about it lol!"

Do it! Best book I've read in the last two years!

message 25: by Anne (new)

Anne Simonot I read this last year too, not longer after its release. It was so much fun! Andy Weir definitely writes the plucky hero fighting against immense odds really well. I have no idea if the science was accurate, but he makes it interesting.

And the characters... what else is there to say? This unlikely friendship is what makes the book. Am I wrong? I loved everything about it. And the ending.... not quite what you want to happen, but certainly the more realistic option than the unlikely, too good to be true, fairy tale ending. It was somehow just so -- fitting. The ending hit me with all the feels... happy, sad, bittersweet. I might have had a tear in my eye.

Let me say that I am THRILLED there's going to be a movie! Count me in. Opening day.

Jeff Koeppen Gertie wrote: "I friggin loved this book. Everyone has their favorite tropes, character types, ways of writing... and this one just combined so many of my favorite things I couldn't not love it.

100% agree. Being a fan of Weir I preordered it on Audible way back when and ripped right through it. It was hard to hit the stop button. I bought a paper copy for my wife and reread some of it. He just nailed it on all fronts with this novel. An Ray Porter's narration in Audible was AMAZING! AMAZING I TELL YOU!

message 27: by Nancy (new)

Nancy I read this when it first came out. I really enjoyed it. A fun book. I did not expect the ending at all. The unexpected friendship was great (refreshing the alien wasn’t evil and out to destroy) - also something I didn’t expect. It was funny that Weir had one character dropping f-bombs and then doing completely the opposite with this book.

message 28: by WTEK (new)

WTEK I read this one last year and I liked it better than Artemis (which I wasn't that into), but not as much as the Martian. I absolutely loved Rocky and I agree that it was good that he didn't go for the everything worked out perfect ending.

I really wondered why a high school teacher would ever be picked for this mission, and the way he knew so much bothered me at times, but ultimately I enjoyed the book enough to overcome that (mostly.)

message 29: by Lawrence (last edited Jul 03, 2023 10:45AM) (new)

Lawrence I must be in some alternative universe. I picked up Winter World by AG Riddle. Why did I think that was next? I guess when I finish that (I'm enjoying it), i'll back track and get Project Hail Mary.

message 30: by Vérité (new)

Vérité Ventures I enjoyed the flashbacks and contemporary storyline (view spoiler) joined. But, when it was just Grace in the contemporary line, I found it very tedious. It felt like it drifted from manic stream of consciousness to just reading someone’s “to do” list page after page. So, I was glad when (view spoiler), just from an ease of reading perspective.

There were moments that reminded me of part of the discussion of Sea of Rust. E.g. when Stratt says “I don’t care about morality, I care about saving humanity.” It's interesting to think about when/where our collective drive to survive stops being admirable and becomes malicious.

message 31: by Jakub (new)

Jakub Majer I've just started reading and story about dimming sun reminded me about the movie "Sunshine" i watched some time ago: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0448134/

It has good rating but i didn't like it that much for some reason.

Book however is amazing so far.

message 32: by Gertie (last edited Jul 06, 2023 11:46AM) (new)

Gertie I think if you keep watching this topic you should have all the info you need to know what book is when.

They are also on the homepage, though they will briefly drop off when going from to-read to currently-reading due to how GR manages the bookshelves.

Or just bookmark the book club folder which has the titles and months in the subject line of each topic: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...

Yeah, that last suggestion is the best one I think.

message 33: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I have to admit that to a certain point I really thought Weir (view spoiler)

message 34: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Lol! That's pretty funny.

message 35: by Jakub (new)

Jakub Majer Wow this book was awesome, I'm jumping to The Martian right away.

message 36: by Lawrence (last edited Jul 11, 2023 04:54AM) (new)

Lawrence Gertie wrote: "I think if you keep watching this topic you should have all the info you need to know what book is when.

In a strange way, getting discombobulated, I pretty much know from the comments that i'll enjoy this and not take a pass, though I usually only pass on a book due to time constraints.

message 37: by Farmer (new)

Farmer Lynn I started on Tuesday and am already halfway through. I had read and LOVED The Martian and had this and Artemis in my kindle library, but they got lost over time because I'm a hopeless ebook collector...so I'm glad you guys gave me this nudge to pull them out.

I love Weir's relatable writing style and characters. Nerdy doers are the best kind of people in my book and need to be highlighted for their awesomeness like this more often.

message 38: by Gertie (new)

Gertie "Nerdy doer" haha. Yes, it's a likable type!

message 39: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I enjoyed this book immensely. I never could decide which was my favorite, this or the Martian. What’s everyone’s favorite?

message 40: by Jakub (new)

Jakub Majer This one is better because of Rocky.

“This is happy! Your face opening is in sad mode. Why, question?”

message 41: by Chad (new)

Chad Lynn wrote: "I love Weir's relatable writing style and characters. Nerdy doers are the best kind of people in my book and need to be highlighted for their awesomeness like this more often."

When I legit laugh out loud on a regular basis from the geekery then it's 5 stars for me! So many great giggly geeky moments!

message 42: by Ector (new)

Ector Garcia Such a good book Sci Fi is not my go to genre but this on had me hooked from the very beginning.

message 43: by Jim (new)

Jim I couldn't put this book down! One of the best sci-fi novels I've read in a while, and we choose a lot of good ones here at AW. What I liked best were the main characters and the dialog between them. The novel shows that it's not necessarily the originality of the story that makes it great, but how it's told.

message 44: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I think Weir has created a new genre "understandable hard science sci-fi and people end up really enjoying it. Some hard science is difficult to slog through because it's so techy, but Weir's is so accessible, and you end up learning a lot as you read.

message 45: by Lawrence (new)

Lawrence Since I am a dolt and am reading the books out of order, i'll have this from the library in a week or so to undertake.

message 46: by Amanda (last edited Jul 27, 2023 05:40AM) (new)

Amanda Lee I adored this book. I was instructed to go into it totally blind.

And it has easily landed itself in my top 5 favorite books of all time.

This isn't the standard Science Fiction "Space-cowboys, Orcs, and laser pew-pews". Its just a fantastic fiction about science.

Also, the humor is spot-on!

message 47: by Bonnie (new)

Bonnie I love this book and the audio version is brilliant, conveying the new language in a way that can't really be done in print.

message 48: by Lupe (new)

Lupe Dominguez I'm so behind. I forgot to "download" it to my kindle when I traveled this past weekend, so I couldn't even start it while I was on the plane for 4 hours (2 there and 2 back). I'm so mad at myself lol.

message 49: by Nicole (new)

Nicole (Nerdish.Maddog) Bonnie wrote: "I love this book and the audio version is brilliant, conveying the new language in a way that can't really be done in print."

I agree the audio version is fantastic. The producers went over the top with Rocky's voice and it really made the book a fully immersive experience.
Overall the story was a fun end of the world/first contact book that reminds you not every book written in this genre has to be dark.

message 50: by Gertie (new)

Gertie Oh I may have to get the audio and experience it that way too!
