Steve Shelby Bering Straight by FX Holden (2018)
Pages: 526 | Rated: 4.42 | Ratings: 2098
Bering Strait (Future War #1) by F.X. Holden F.X. Holden Tim Slee

Why? This author also wrote the Aggressor series, a 5-book series I read last year about China trying to take Taiwan. I thought that series was the best writing in the genre in the last couple years. Bering Straight is one of his first books in his earlier Future War series. It seems to have some of the same characters that later appear in the Aggressor series. Only 2000 ratings, but rated way up there at 4.42.

Publisher’s Summary
Without warning, Russia starts a lightning operation to seize control of a vital arctic waterway off the Alaska coast.
For America, it's a threat to national sovereignty.
For Russia, it's a matter of life or death.
For hot-wired naval aviator, Karen 'Bunny' O'Hare, it's about to be a bad day at the office.

NOT everyone takes impending nuclear armageddon as calmly as O'Hare. Dug in deep behind enemy lines, half a mile under the arctic ice, US Navy Airboss Alicia Rodriguez suddenly finds herself in command of the wrong unit, in the wrong place, at just the right time.

FROM a forward airfield at Lavrentiya in the Russian Far East, Major-General Yevgeny Bondarev, is leading a war he doesn't understand against a foe who fights with machines instead of men.

IN labyrinthine tunnels under the New Annexe of the US Embassy in Moscow, Ambassador Devlin McCarthy discovers she can follow her conscience, or follow the orders of her Secretary of State, but not both.

AND staggering through the rubble of cruise missile strikes on Saint Lawrence Island, Yu'pik teenager Perri Tungyan learns just how far his country is willing to go to protect its national interests, and how far he'll go himself.

Steve Shelby Great! I’m ~4 hours in out of 20. There is a bit of action early but primarily setting the stage for the first 2 hours, and then it gets moving.

I am a big fan of the Aggressor series under the same pen name. This Future War series features the same main protagonist, Bunny O’Hare, a talented pilot, in this series flying drones.

Helena Trooperman First listen and I'm in. Already on Chapter 5 and the scenario and players are set - A Russian autonomous tanker carrying billions of dollars worth of lithium, misses a massive iceberg only to explode in Russian waters a short time later. AI is used to weigh the likelihood of where the missiles originated. Origin is clear but that's strongly disputed. AI analyzes and collates worldwide chatter to reveal it could have been an inside job...but how? And what happens next?

I found the AI talk ground my gears a bit, although it was very positive, too positive as it gave all the answers and it did make me wonder if the story was - essentially solved already by the AI.

I'm looking forward to hearing more about Bunny, for sure. While I love tech, I love the people behind the tech more. The plot sounds pretty great.

Steve Shelby This one is clipping along with good pace. I'm at about halfway already.

Russell Atkinson I read this in March and really liked it. I found it through this group, so thanks to whoever recommended it or voted for it.

Steve Shelby Your 3 stars makes me wonder, but if you did like it, the Aggressor series by the same author was well done. They’re better than this one.

We’re happy to take nominations each month for book of the month. Not many people contribute.

Simon Mortimer Unlikely I will be able to join in on this one - too much going on in the real world. I should be back on board for the next one.
Happy reading all.

Steve Shelby The premise on this one is shaky—implausible, at several points—but tolerably so. It has good action and pace. This author shows very strong knowledge of missile systems.

Jed Henson Agreed, Steve. His fight scenes are always so good!

Steve Shelby I pressed through and finished. Liked it overall. Will have to do a review tomorrow.

Steve Shelby I like it. Realized as I finished it that it was actually #3 in the Future Wars series, not #1. Goodreads lists it as #1 in the series, but Amazon lists it as #3.

Jed Henson Finished! FX Holden is just good. Great characters and combat. A more than worthy heir to Tom Clancy.

Helena Trooperman I finished this story pretty quick. (Sorry for the delay in posting, work got a bit crazy.) I found once I got into the story I really enjoyed it. I did enjoy the quick initiative and resilience of the characters, not just Bunny O'hare. I enjoyed the Apollo Murders more, but maybe that's in my wheelhouse a bit more. I don't think I'd read it again though.
