Ludwig Aczel If I remember correctly, he wrote this book for alimentary reasons. I think this was when he was invited as a lecturer at a New York university, and even before the semester started was brought to trial by a local family association, obviously lead by some priests. They feared that this British demon would teach 'atheism' (!!!) to them good naive American boys wanting to study philosophy in college. Legendary trial, where, among other things, Russell's lawyer had to prove that, no, he and his wife were NOT running a nudist beach in England! 😅
He ended up forced out of the tenure (yeah, the crazy people won), found himself stuck in NYC penniless for months, so he accepted the request of a publisher to write this history of western philosophy book.

It is surprisingly accessible in my opinion, considering he also wrote so many other books on far-flung topics.
