Thanks Stepheny! As I was writing the review I just kept thinking about the influence that the car was having on Manx not only physically, but mentally as well. He was for all intents and purposes losing his soul...ahh yes the car is a Horcrux.

What are you an editor by trade? If so, I would have to disagree with your editing. You are changing the meaning of the statement. I think it could apply to a child or an adult making that statement thus the use of someone. Reread the line and understand the line before you start editing. I guess you believe you are a better writer than Joe Hill and his editors. You must believe in unicorns and Smurfs as well.

Vessey Thank you so much for re-posting this great review, Jeffrey! I'm really glad I could read it for a second time. It sounds awesome, but maybe a tad too scary for this lady here. :) Then again, Halloween is coming...P.S. I have seen The Nightmare Before Christmas at least twice and I love it!

Thank you for reading it again. I'm becoming a big Joe Hill fan. I really need to read his new book The Fireman. Probably this is not your cup of tea.

Will Byrnes 'Tis the season. Great job, JK! As good as this book was, his next was even better, IMHO. Bodes well for his future production.

Thanks Will! I am looking forward to the The Fireman. I've been a fan of "The Kid's" work from the beginning.

Chelsea Humphrey Excellent review Jeff! I’ve been meaning to read this for years now and clearly this is a sign I should move it to the top of my TBR. I mean... it is almost Christmas after all!

message 30: by Susanne (new)

Susanne Brilliant review! I tend to agree with you - this novel is in fact his masterpiece. Manx, Christmasland and Vic McQueen. I recently went to a restaurant in Captiva, Florida - it’s theme is that it is Christmas everyday - I did not find it enjoyable and was in fact scared to death. LOL. :)

message 31: by Monica (new)

Monica Great review!! And I really enjoyed this book as well. I'm excited to read more by Hill.

This is my favorite Joe Hill so far. It is an epic horror tale that reminds me of someone else...hmmm...that other guy from Maine. Thanks Chelsea! I have no doubts you will like this and as you mentioned tis the season. If you like the book you should definitely check out the standalone comic series called Wraith.

You were suffering from the residual Hill Impact. Indeed! He has taken Christmas to place beyond even Nightmare Before Christmas. *shudder* Forget Halloween, Christmas is the holiday to lock all the doors and windows and sit as close to the fireplace as possible while casting fearful glances at every odd sound just hoping you don't see Manx's face pressed against the window glass. Thank you Susanne! We are united in fear. :-)

Awesome! Thanks Monica! Luckily "the kid" is putting out a new book every year. I'll be curious to see if he writes anything better than this.

message 35: by Matt (new)

Matt Great review. I adore Joe Hill. Fell in love since Heart Shaped Box, but I haven't seen him surpass NOS4R2 yet. Fireman and Strange Weather were good, but not quite the this standard.

I liked Fireman, but I thought it was a bit bloated. Heart Shaped Box is great and NOS4R2 is to me his masterpiece. I haven't read Strange Weather yet, but on my short list. Thanks Matt!

Dennis I'm currently reading this book, and just got up to where Vic's son is in the picture. Amazing review, and I can't wait to see what else happens! Seriously though, this review is everything.

message 47: by Sheri (new)

Sheri I'm really surprised I didn't see your review for NOS4A2 sooner. It is one of my all-time favorites. I agree, it's Hill's masterpiece and I often wonder if he will ever write anything comparable or better. I've read all of his books and none of them compare to this book. His writing was brilliant. He created characters that I adored and characters that I despised. Bing gave me the heebie-jeebies. I loved Maggie and wanted to pick her up, hug her, bring her home and be her stepmom. I did not know about the differences in title for American vs British versions. Now, I really want a copy of the British version for no other reason than to just own it. Is it weird that I no longer buy and candles or air freshener that are Christmas scented? Ha!! Excellent review, as always Jeffrey. It's so much fun reading the review of someone that shares the love of an authors writing.

message 48: by Sheri (new)

Sheri I forgot I had one other comment. I've read this book several times and each time I read it, I discover something new. I enjoy it more with each new reading. I don't know how I missed some things on the first reading. I was probably trying to protect myself from the emotional trauma of Bing. Ha!

I saw the cover of the British edition and couldn't resist. I love it when the American and British covers are different for books. Most of the time I prefer the Brits concepts for dust jackets. I completely agree that this is probably going to be Hill's masterpiece, but he is still young. There might be another grand concept percolating in his mind. Thanks Sheri! I'm so glad you enjoyed this book so much!

message 50: by Mark (new)

Mark Lawicki Fantastic review. The British cover variant is more appealing for me. Thanks for pointing this out. I just finished the book myself and am looking forward to the new Nos4a2 series on AMC. Hope they capture some of the Joe Hill’s magic onscreen.
